I'm playing a normal playthrough and giving it my all and it's not uncommon for me to get blackouts fighting random route trainers (and that's avoiding Ace Trainers, because fuck those guys), it's definitely made with a trial and error approach of brainstorming what you can do to counter the shit getting thrown at you, that's what makes it fun to play but also what will make it unbearable to nuzlocke. If you want to do it and waste your time, go ahead, but expect to waste dozens of hours grinding the same trainers to overpower all the crazy bullshit the hack throws at you by a lot, and you'll still die.

It's designed so your Pokemon faint in gym/rival/ace battles, it's balanced that way and is pretty much the hardest experience you can have in a single player Pokemon game under the limitations of the current AI.
